Paramus Looks to Open Outdoor Dining Option to More Businesses

New permit process would make it easier for businesses to be able to offer outdoor dining.

Paramus borough officials are looking into creating an easier process for businesses who would like to offer outdoor dining.

Officials are looking to create a permit process so businesses would no longer have to go through the more lengthy and costly process of applying to Zoning Board for outdoor dining approval.

This new process would open the door to smaller shops like a bagel shop or yogurt spot which just wants to put a few tables and chairs outside for customers in the warm weather months, explained Mayor Richard LaBarbiera.

“With spring coming up it would be good for businesses and I think residents would truly benefit from this as well,” the mayor said during the work session this week.

The governing body members and borough attorney discussed the regulations that would need to be put in place via an ordinance.

Outdoor seating could be based on 15 or 20 percent of the general seating of the restaurant. Outdoor space requirements and other codes pertaining to safety would all have to be met, according to officials.

Some discussion was based on whether alcohol consumption should be allowed at outdoor dining areas.

It was agreed that outdoor dining would be limited to the hours the restaurant is open.  There would be a fee required for obtaining the permit. No dollar amount was discussed yet.
