Paramus Looks to Co-op Ice Hockey Program to Keep Program Alive

Paramus High School is looking to co-op its ice hockey program with Hasbrouck Heights High School in order to keep the program running next season.

Board of Education trustee Jeffrey Warren told fellow board members this week the program is struggling due to dwindling number of players and expenses and therefore needs to co-op in order to keep it running.

He says Paramus currently has 18 skaters, six of whom have not skated before. If Hasbrouck Heights agrees to take part in the program it will add six more players to the team, all of whom play the sport on club teams, said Warren. 

Warren said co-op teams are common in other districts such as River Dell which has a co-op team with Westwood for swimming and ice hockey.

If this co-op takes place Paramus would be the host team and the Hasbrouck Heights teammates would wear Spartan uniform.

Warren pointed out it’s a survival for the hockey team as it may otherwise have to fold.

“This would keep the kids playing,” he said.

No decisions have been made yet but according to Warren, Hasbrouck Heights is expected to make a decision in the next month.

At a January Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education meeting it was stated the district was considering options to coop with either Paramus or Old Tappan for ice hockey.
