Spartans Take Home Best Band Award

Paramus High School marching band earned the title of Best Band in its division and other titles in the Music in the Park competition over the weekend.

The Spartan Marching Band has done it again.

Paramus High School took home the top prize over the weekend in the "Music in the Park" marching band competition being named Best Overall Band out of 10 schools.

Mark Donellan, band director, said the marching band which is 117 members strong also won Best Band in division AA which represents band with more than 100 members. The band was also awarded for best guard and best music in their division and also won best overall guard, said Donellan.

He says this is the third time the marching band has won this competition having also earned the title in 2008 and 2011. "Music in the Parks" is an independently run marching competition sponsored by the Midland Park High School bands, he says.

So far this is the only competition the Spartan Marching Band has been in this season but its members will be gearing up for the North Jersey Band Festival at Montclair State University on Oct. 28, says Donellan.

Donellan credits the dedication of the band members to their achievement. He says they work consistently through practices, treating them like performances. He also credits the "outstanding group of student leaders who push their peers to perfection."
