Suicide Prevented by Bergen County Police Officer, Cops Say
A young woman was 'cutting and slicing' her left arm until a Bergen County Police Officer and BCC campus public safety officer stepped in, according to police.
Christopher Ham, a Bergen County Police Officer stationed at the Paramus Campus of Bergen Community College, responded to a report from campus public safety of a person attempting suicide in a campus bathroom.
Ham arrived and found a 26-year-old female on the floor of a woman’s bathroom with a large shard of glass in her hand. According to police, Ham noticed a pool of blood on the floor along with other shards of glass and the young woman was cutting and slicing her left arm.
As Ham tried to talk the woman into dropping the shard of glass, she continued to slice her arm. Ham eventually knocked the glass from her hand but she quickly tried to grab another piece at which point Ham began to physically struggle and restrain the woman as she continued to attempt to harm herself, said police.

With the assistance from the campus public safety officer, the woman was eventually restrained and transported to Bergen Regional Medical Center for psychiatric evaluation and treatment, said police.
“The Bergen County Police Department has been operating a sub station at the Paramus Campus since 2007,” said BCPD Lt. Jim Mullin. “This allowed Ham to arrive within seconds and ultimately saving the life of this young woman.”
