Westwood Woman Struck, Killed By Car In Paramus

A 61-year-old was hit by a car Sunday morning by the Assyrian Apostolic Church on Paramus Road, police said.

PARAMUS, NJ – A 61-year-old Westwood woman died after being struck by a car in front of a church in Paramus on Sunday, according to authorities.

Around 11:30 a.m., police were called to the Assyrian Apostolic Church on Paramus Road after receiving a report that a woman was hit while trying to cross the street, Chief Kenneth Ehrenberg said.

Police and Paramus EMS tried to treat the pedestrian, Lucy Akdemir, and she was taken to Valley Hospital, where she later died due to her injuries, the chief said.

Further investigation revealed Akdemir had almost crossed Paramus Road when she was struck by a 2006 Toyota Highlander driven by Christal Chang, a 56-year-old Ridgewood woman, Ehrenberg said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident and no charges have been filed at this time, the chief said.
