UPDATE: 40 Kids, 2 Adults Sent to Hospital After Bus Crash

A total of 40 children—9- and 10-year-olds— and two adults were sent to area hospitals after one school bus rear-ended another at milepost 42.9 on eastbound Interstate 80 in Parsippany Thursday morning, State Police said.

One juvenile was transported to with an asthma condition and 39 other children and two adults were transported to area hospitals for reasons ranging from complaints of pain to minor cuts and bruises, state police said.

Nineteen of the 40 kids went to St. Clare's in Denville and the rest went to Morristown Medical Center, state police said. The buses were part of a caravan headed to Six Flags from Lindenmeyer Sports Camp in Tannersville, Pa. The buses were transporting 9- and 10-year-olds, state police said.

State Trooper Christopher Kay said initial reports showed only the one child who suffered from the asthma attack was taken to a hospital. However, others then also needed to be transported. 

The accident occurred shortly before 11 a.m., and closed the right lane of the highway while the crash was investigated until about 12:30 p.m., state police said.

Two additional buses sustained minor damage in the crash, state police said.
