Woman Charged After Facebook Post Boasts About Running Over Cats

Police say the person bragged about it on social media.

HOPATCONG, NJ — A woman was arrested after allegedly running over a cat on purpose in Hopatcong and then bragging about it online, police said on Tuesday.

Vasfije Cain was charged with hitting a domestic animal and failing to report an accident following an Aug. 22 incident, police said. Cain allegedly struck a cat on purpose with her car, and later bragged about it on Facebook. Police did not say if the cat survived. Hopatcong police did not return multiple requests for comment.

According to police, Cain shared, "As he drives mom around and runs over 3 cats maybe people should keep there cats at there house and not on the street so proud of him Eliminating the cat population."

Screenshots of the alleged post were shared online by the advocacy group Justice for Dogs Network. The wording in the screenshots and the date stamp on the post matches the information shared by police. An account for Cain appears to have been removed from Facebook.

A petition circulating through Care2 calls for Cain to face animal cruelty charges. The petition was first created on Sept. 10, the day before police announced charges.
