'You Ruined Sixth Grade!' Parsippany Student Lashes Out in Letter to Administration

As concrete schedules begin to reach students, more changes impact middle schools for 2015-16 school year.

It’s not just about uncertainty of which classes students will be in for the rest of the school year. There’s much more to it, and one student is making her feelings well known to the superintendent.

As September comes to a close, the botched schedule issue for more than 1,000 students at Parsippany’s two middle schools – Brooklawn and Central – has yet to be fully resolved, and it has taken its toll on the student body.

It was announced just before the school year began there would be scheduling issues in the two schools, but as the days and weeks rolled on, the saga became exacerbated when Superintendent Scott Rixford announced a medical leave, then, last week, submitted his letter of resignation.

Rixford was the person who recommended the board approve a schedule adjustment for the 2015-16 school year, which clearly failed spectacularly.

Assistant Superintendent Nancy Gigante has stepped in while Rixford is away and pushed the schedule back to its old setup, for the sake of students receiving class schedules and getting the school year’s academics underway sooner than later.

But what about the kids? The change has taken its toll on the students, and one sixth grader, Carly Spiel, wants the powers that be to hear her frustrations.

Spiel penned a letter to schools chief, which Patch has transcribed below with permission from her mother, Robin Spiel.

Dear Superintendent,

You ruined my sixth grade experience! It’s unforgiveable what you did, and now all of my friends have classes with each other, and I know nobody on my team. It would’ve been better if you had stayed out of this to begin with. You were so selfish, and you only did it for the money. That shows you don’t care about us kids. You might of thought it was chaos at the BOE meeting; oh wait! You weren’t there! You were on “medical leave!” I hope I never see you again, and that you don’t do this to another town! As if you get elected. Have a wonderful rest of the year!

Carly Spiel received her new schedule yesterday, her mother told Patch, and every one of the teachers she had over the first three weeks of school has changed and was worried she had all the wrong school supplies.

It is the students, Robin Spiel said, that are the victims of this situation and “have been given very little if no consideration from both the administration and the Board of Education.”
