WED. UPDATE: Boat Had Mechanical Failure Before Hitting Jetty

The Ocean One commercial fishing vessel had a mechanical failure that caused loss of power that led it to collide into the rock jetty on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet, the Coast Guard said on Wednesday afternoon.

The scallop boat was coming back into the inlet when it lost power and the shoal that has developed along the jetty since Sandy had nothing to do with the incident, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Dan Wishnoff.

Three people were safely rescued from a commercial scalloping vessel that drifted onto the rock jetty on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet on Tuesday night, according to the Coast Guard.

There were no injuries among the three, whose names were not yet available, said Joseph Hartline, a general service employee of the Coast Guard.

The crew aboard Ocean One called the Coast Guard at 8:48 p.m. Tuesday to report that they had lost power and were running aground on the rocks, Hartline said.

"They said they still had fuel, I don't know why they lost power," Hartline said, adding that will be part of the continuing investigation.

Five members of the Coast Guard from the Manasquan station removed the three crew members.

The 75-foot steel hull fishing vessel is now on the ground near the inlet and authorities are planning how to remove it, Hartline said.

Point Beach police, the Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad, a first aid dive team and the Point Beach Fire Department were called to the scene.
