Ex-Treasurer Sentenced In Theft From Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company

Salvatore Umek also must repay more than $100,000 that he stole and used to pay off credit cards, the prosecutor said.

POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — The former treasurer of Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company 2 has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing more than $100,000 from the fire company, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office announced.

Salvatore Umek, 46, of Point Pleasant Beach, was sentenced Friday by Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan to prison and ordered to repay $107,517 that he stole from the fire company between February 2019 and November 2021, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

Umek pleaded guilty to the theft charge before Superior Court Judge Dina M. Vicari on June 10.

The investigation by the prosecutor's office Economic Crime Squad and Point Pleasant Beach police revealed that between February 2019 and November 2021, Umek, used his access the fire company's treasurer to unlawfully transfer funds from the organization’s bank account to pay off personal credit card debt in the amount of approximately $100,000.

Umek also transferred a sum of money directly into his personal bank account, and utilized the funds for his own benefit, authorities found.

Umek surrendered himself to Point Pleasant Beach police on July 12, 2023, and was served with the charges.

Senior Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Heisler handled the case on behalf of the state. The prosecutor's office Economic Crime Squad and Point Pleasant Beach police collaborated on the investigation.
