JERSEY SHORE, NJ — Looking to spend a day at the beach? This weekend may be a good one for hanging out on the sand and soaking up the sunshine.

Here is a look from Patch at the beach forecast for the second weekend of August.

The National Weather Service is calling for high temperatures around 80 degrees and plenty of sunshine. The forecast does not anticipate impacts from Tropical Storm Erin at the beaches this weekend but forecasters continue to monitor the storm, which is supposed to become a Category 4 hurricane.

Rip current risk is listed as low, according to the weather service, though anyone at the beach should listen to the lifeguards because offshore storms have caused issues with strong waves for several days.

If you plan to go in the water, do so only on beaches where lifeguards are present. Read up on what to look for to identify rip currents: Rip Currents In NJ: What To Look For, How To Survive Them

JELLYFISH
From the New Jersey Jellyspotters

Jellyfish are thick in the bays and lagoons. There were no recent posts by beachgoers or residents in the New Jersey Jellyspotters Facebook group as of Friday, but in mid-August bay nettles are commonly encountered.

For those opting to take a dip in the bays this weekend instead of dealing with the ocean, here are some reminders from Paul Bologna, the jellyfish expert from Montclair State University, about how to treat jellyfish stings: Apply white vinegar immediately. This stops any stinging cells that have not fired in the tentacles. Rinse the sting area with the salt water you are in to wash away tentacles. Do not use bottled water to rinse as osmotic shock will cause stinging cells left behind to fire and continue to sting. Wipe the area clean with a clean towel or cloth. Benadryl or calamine lotion can help with itching, and over-the-counter pain medicines can be used for pain from the stings depending on the severity.
