Former longtime official stresses need for two-party local government

A Letter to the Editor From Former Point Pleasant Beach Councilman Daniel DiCorcia

As we approach yet another Election Day, I am reaching out to Point Pleasant Beach voters to appeal to them to vote for the Row A candidates for Point Pleasant Beach Borough Council, Don Rodgers and Russ Kelly. I have given great thought to this endorsement and please allow me to tell you why I ask you for this most important gift you can give our town.

For most of my life I taught eighth-grade American history. I also had the honor and privilege of serving more than two decades as a member of our council, making me the longest serving Democrat ever in the history of Ocean County. These life experiences have taught me many things, chief among them is the need for two-party government.

We have not had that second voice on the council for a long time now. And as my experience as a teacher and a councilman has taught me, this is bad for our town because only a single voice is being represented or being heard.

For those among us who are Republicans, have no fear. By electing the team of Rodgers and Kelly you are not giving Democrats a majority vote on Council. You're only assuring that you, Democrats and Independents have the opportunity of hearing different views on the many issues of concern facing us.

When I sat alone on the council I could give that voice to the people. But when I was joined by Councilwoman Monica Walsh for her four terms, we could force a vote by the majority on such issues as the budget, funding for lake dredging, securing a grant for downtown sidewalk restoration and the like.

Help the very competent “A” Team of Rodgers and Kelly step up to the plate and give you that much needed representation on Council. Your vote is very important. Just ask former Councilwoman Walsh: she won her first victory by one vote!
