NJ Weather: Severe Thunderstorm Watch, 36K Without Power

A severe thunderstorm watch was issued for 16 NJ counties as more than 36K lost power after 45-mph winds hit the Garden State.

NEW JERSEY – Bad weather hit New Jersey on Sunday night – with more expected on Monday morning – after the National Weather Service issued warnings across the Garden State. More than 36,000 lost power in towns across the state on Sunday night (see list of towns below).

Flooding and downed wires were also reported across the state, impacting a number of roads and highways (see list below).

The NWS issued a severe thunderstorm watch for 16 of New Jersey's 21 counties, saying that damaging 45-mph winds and rough weather are supposed to hit the Garden State after 8 to 9 p.m. – and maybe as late as 1 a.m.

  • Downed tree on NJ 124 eastbound Danforth Rd in Madison. One right lane closed.
  • Crash on the Atlantic City Expressway eastbound East of Exit 17 - NJ 50 in Hamilton Twp. One left lane and shoulder closed. MOVE OVER FOR EMERGENCY VEHICLES.
  • Downed pole and downed wires on NJ 29 southbound area of River Rd in Hopewell Twp. All lanes closed.
  • Downed pole and downed wires on NJ 29 northbound area of River Rd in Hopewell Twp. All lanes closed.
  • Crash on the New Jersey Turnpike southbound South of Interchange 3 - NJ 168 in Deptford Twp. One left lane blocked.
  • Downed pole and downed wires on NJ 36 northbound area of Atlantic St in Keyport. All lanes closed and detoured.

Gusty winds arriving Sunday afternoon will persist into Monday, and coastal areas of the mid-Atlantic and New England could experience wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph, according to AccuWeather.

When the rain arrives, it could contain wind-whipped rain and a burst of even stronger winds, according to AccuWeather. Gusty downpours, along with some thunder, will sweep from central Pennsylvania and northern Virginia in the late afternoon to the New England coast Sunday night.

  • Sunday night: Showers and thunderstorms before 1 a.m., then a slight chance of showers between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. Some storms could be severe, with damaging winds. Low around 42. Breezy, with a south wind 15 to 25 mph becoming west in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible
