PRINCETON, NJ — Thanks to the freezing temperatures, the pond at Community Park North is open for ice skating as of Thursday.

Earlier all sites across the municipality were closed to the public as it was deemed unsafe by Princeton Recreation Department staff.

PRD staff are reminding residents who wish to use the pond at Community Park North to skate only during daylight hours and never skate alone.

Here's what you need to know:

  • While the thickness of the pond is safe for skating it is not a perfectly smooth surface.
  • Pay attention to rough or jagged areas and avoid any areas that have been spray painted in red.
  • Pay attention to the flag system. White flags mean it is safe for skating. Red flags mean that the location is closed.

Although the pond is open on Thursday, it could close the next day if deemed unsafe. Staff visits all locations every day to check the thickness of the ice and post updates on their Facebook page. Please check this page every day before planning to go ice skating.

The ice skating thickness is not checked during snowfall or when snow is visible on the surface as these are unsafe conditions.

The Smoyer Park Pond and Lake Carnegie remain closed.
