Bergen County 'Cash-For-Gold' Shop Cited For Violations In Statewide Crack-Down

The results of a statewide crackdown on "cash-for-gold" stores violating consumer protection laws in New Jersey were announced by the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs and its Office of Weights and Measures today. 

In total, 936 civil citations were issued to 21 northern and central New Jersey jewelry stores that allegedly violated such laws. 

“New Jersey’s cash-for-gold laws serve two important functions. On one hand they require jewelers to be transparent about their pricing and the evaluation of precious metals when buying from consumers," Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman said in a press release.

"On the other hand, they help fight the sale of stolen jewelry, by requiring the buyers to maintain a fully detailed record that can be provided to police.” 

One Bergen County location, Reliance Gold Buyers in Emerson, was cited for alleged violations, Hoffman said. The store allegedly failed to post the prices offered for precious metals and to maintain receipts with required information such as the weights, fineness, and prices paid per unit of weight for purchased jewelry, authorities said.
