Paramus Man Charged with Two Counts of Being Under the Influence in 3-Car Crash
Pot smoking at an elementary school, would-be home invasions, drunk driving, and theft round out some of the other police incidents from this past week.

The police are alleging that a Paramus man caused a three-vehicle crash on Friday, Aug. 27 at around noon on East Ridgewood Avenue. Patrolman Michael McDermott responded to the mini-pileup and charged 25-year-old Charles Mattson with a DUI and an additional charge of being under the influence of a controlled dangerous substance; what that substance was has not been specified.
According to the report, Mattson rear-ended a vehicle, which in turn caused that vehicle to strike another car. Mattson has a pending appearance in Ridgewood Municipal Court.
The police are also reporting a few other incidents from this past week.

- Alarm trips up alleged juvenile marijuana smokers
The Somerville Elementary School alarm activated on Aug. 25, but it shouldn't have. Patrolman Anthony Mormino checked out the case and found two juveniles around the back of the school walking to a parked car. He also saw three juveniles near the picnic tables and spotted one of them tossing something to the ground, which turned out to be marijuana, police said. The juvenile was arrested for posession of marijuana and released to his parents that night. He'll see juvenile court in the near future.
- $220 worth of items taken from Indulge
Ridgewood detectives are investigating a case of shoplifted items at Indulge Boutique, valued at $220. The store owner told police that the items were taken on Tuesday, Aug. 24.

- Family has vacation plans; so does would-be home invader
Members of a family on Bogert Avenue came back from vacation to find someone had tried to break into their house. On Aug. 27, the homeowner found a window screen pushed in and another window broken. The unwelcomed guest had no luck getting into the house and eventually vacated the property. The Ridgewood Detective Bureau is investigating.
- Two juveniles accused of setting of fireworks
On Saturday, Aug. 28, Patrolman Kyle Finch got the call that somewhere around Richards Road fireworks were going off. Finch drove to the area and spotted two youth with fireworks. They were taken to custody and released to their parents. They'll be going to juvenile court.
- Alleged drunk driver hits utility pole
Police are alleging that at about 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29, a drunk driver struck a utility pole on South Pleasant Avenue. The driver, Omar Troche, a 35-year-old man from Elmont, NY was arrested and charged with a DWI. No word on the condition of the utility pole.
- North Irving Street Lamppost damaged
On Aug. 27, a North Irving Street resident reported that during the night her lamppost had been damaged. The matter is under investigation by the Ridgewood Detective Bureau.
