RHS Students Get $1K Grant for Recycling Program

One of 64 schools in the county to receive Environmental Challenge award.

Ridgewood High School’s Students for Environmental Action recently received a county grant of $1,000 to promote recycling at the school.

The grant was among a total of $60,000 distributed to 64 public and private schools by the Bergen County Utilities Authority for students to undertake environmental challenges.

The grant to Ridgewood was the maximum amount available through the program, which for seven years has encouraged schools to conduct campaigns for environmental awareness.

The high school club last year decided that recycling policies at the school needed “uniformity,” according to its advisor, teacher Alison Reeg.

Since September, the club has distributed to classrooms separate, color-coded bins for plastics and paper, as well as promoting the initiative through posters around the school.

The students, Reeg said, the students have worked with school and custodial staff to promote compliance with the initiative.
