Rock Slide Closes Part Of Popular NJ Interstate Park: Officials

Part of a popular waterfront park in North Jersey has closed due to a rock slide, park officials said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — If you're planning to hike on the "Giant Stairs" at a popular North Jersey waterfront park, you may have to hold off.

On Friday, the Palisades Parks Conservatory posted on social media that a portion of Palisades Interstate Park — which spans the Hudson River from New Jersey to New York — was closed due to a rock slide.

"The 'Giant Stairs' section of the Shore Trail near State Line Lookout at the Palisades Interstate Park in New Jersey is closed due to a major rockfall and slide," the group posted just before 3 p.m. on Friday.

"This area of the park is unsafe due to the risk of possible additional rockfall activity! NJ Palisades park staff is addressing the situation, and they will update the public as soon as possible."

A notice on the park website Monday confirmed that the stairs were closed and said guidance would be updated when there's a change.

Calls to park officials and the Conservancy on Monday were not returned by press time, but this story will be updated when information is received. An outgoing message reached via the Conservancy's phone number said that the park website is the best place to get updates.

The 4.3-mile Giant Stairs area, located in Alpine, is "a long section of huge boulders that have tumbled from the Palisades," notes a hiking website. The area offers views of the Hudson River and New York, and also affords a view of the Peanut Leap Cascade.

The park spans for 12 miles along the Hudson River, according to its website.
