Storm Stories: Irene Alvarez Hoping Her Name is Retired

Maybe Irma or Imogen will be up next?

On the quiet dead-end street named Allen Place, there was another tempest named Irene. This one isn't nearly the destructive force that's killed dozens and left huge numbers of homes under water and without power. Oddly, Irene Alvarez feels responsible in a way.

"It was weird knowing the devastation and all the media hype that occurred, I felt responsible for people's devastating damage and maybe deaths," she said.

Still, with good-natured teasing, she says it was also funny.

But it's humor she's glad has ended. The mom on Allen Place said she's waiting for the weather-powers-that-be to retire Irene from its storm name docket. There have been three Irene's in twelve years, she reported.
