Street Signs Being Re-Done in Village

Roughly 200 or more signs are receiving a face lift, Village Manager says.

There's a good chance your street sign looks different, and hopefully clearer. According to Village Manager Ken Gabbert, roughly 200 or more signs will be receiving a facelift in the Village over the coming months.

"This is an ongoing maintenance project–not some one time event...work has intensified lately," Gabbert said.

"It's just common sense, we need to be able to see signs clearly from considerable distance, thus trimming [what's] needed, and in some cases new signs go up."

"This is nothing other than making sure we are placing signs in the proper location, removing no longer needed signs, maintaining the signs, and clearing branches, leaves, etc. that could obstruct the signs," Gabbert wrote in an e-mail to Patch.

According to Village Manager, the work is being done as part of the ongoing efforts of the Parks, Signal, and Street Departments and will take "many months" to complete.

"This is a very large project," he said.

The Village is making sure the signs comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices from the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Highway Administration, which outlines that the lettering for names of streets and highways on Street Name signs shall be composed of a combination of lower-case letters with initial upper-case letters, according to 2A. 13 and 2D. 43.

"We are also replacing signs so they meet the new Federal Highway Authority requirements on retro-reflectivity for signage," Village Engineer Chris Rutishauser said.

There is no specific attributed cost for the project, Gabbert said, calling it "just ongoing maintenance."
