Some analysts call Ryan a "bold choice" because the congressman's selection is considered a controversial move and a departure from the "safe" reputation Romney has. Ryan has a long voting history on issues that Democrats want to run on—health care and Social Security, especially.

Ryan also has never run for a statewide ticket, according to ABC News.
