Subway Franchise, Charitable Towns and River Dell Falls in Rankings Top Weekly News

A highlight of what happened this past week in River Dell

With unanimous approval, Subway franchise owner Sanjeet Patel was granted a hardship relief to open his new sandwich shop on Kinderkamack Road after  to Zoning Board of Adjustment. Initially, Patel appeared before the Planning Board for a conditional use application but was determined that the Subway model does not fit the borough's definition of a restaurant because there is no wait staff on site.

Based on a recent study by the Council of Philanthropy and published on Monday's frontpage of The Chronical of Philanthropy, the River Dell towns were found to be more charitable than the New Jersey median in their look at How America Gives. River Edge was ranked 5,808 out of 28,725 with a total contribution of $6.6 million in donations with the median household giving at least $2,273 or 3.4% of their discretionary income. While Oradell, which gave $8.9 million overall, was 2,431 out of 11,522 and had residents donating $3,217 to charity, or 3.6% of their income.

River Dell Regional High School was listed in the top 100 schools in the state of New Jersey in 2010. But according to the New Jersey Monthly’s biennial report released recently, River Dell dropped 77 positions from 27 to 104 in 2011. The rankings are based on recently released data set by the Department of Education's New Jersey School Report Card. The report shows data for 328 public schools in the state.

The New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association released its classifications this week for the upcoming high school football season, following the executive committee's  in the four public school sections in May. The change moves the River Dell Golden Hawks out of North 1 Group 2 and into Group 3; Bergen Catholic remains a Group 4 competitor.

After two decades with the Principal Scott Ryan's career is coming to an end on September 1 as he officially retires from the K-6 district. As such, he will be holding "open office hours" on Thursday, August 30, 9am to 11am and 1pm to 3pm for students and residents to stop in and say goodbye before his final day.

The new Friday night football season is just around the corner and while the River Dell Golden Hawks will be playing host to West Essex in Oradell, MSG Varsity will be kicking off its fall line-up out on Long Island at the anticipated match-up between the  and .

Brewers capture River Edge Adult Softball League championship

The River Edge Adult Softball League, comprised of eight teams which borrow their namesake from Major League Baseball franchises, recently finished up its regular season and playoffs. The Angels finished with the best overall record (11-1), but fell to the Brewers, 6-5, in the championship game. The Brewers finished with the second best record (9-3). The Angels didn't clinch first place until the final regular season game, when the Brewers lost to the Cardinals, who finished 6-7.

Egermayer on the right course

Glen Rock-native Zach Egermayer, a rising star in the powerful Bergen Catholic High School golf program, has turned in a number of outstanding performances on the links this summer. The incoming junior Crusader shot two rounds of 75 in the U.S. Junior Tournament at Peddie School in June; qualified for the State Match Play event at Rumson CC in mid-July but lost in the first round; competed in the U.S. Amateur qualifier at Penn State University; stroked his way through the New Jersey PGA Junior event at Royce Brook Country Club and the Architects Golf Club Junior Challenge in Phillipsburg; and recently took to the links at the Genesis National Junior Open at the Fiddler's Elbow course in Bedminster.
