As the warmer weather begins making its way back and winter winds down, one problem many don’t consider is potholes.
Union County advised residents that road crews will be out “in force” to repair potholes that developed this winter.
“This has been an especially difficult winter, and we want to get our roads back in shape as quickly as possible,” Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh said in a release from Union County. “As you drive, please be mindful that crews will be working in the roadways.”

Potholes develop after water from snow and rain seeps into small cracks in the roadway surface, according to state highway officials. As temperatures drop, the water freezes and expands, making the cracks larger, eventually forming potholes. Heavy traffic, pavement age, vehicle weights, and snow and ice operations contribute to the problem.
