The two-day blizzard slated to dump two feet of snow on much of the state could cause outages. Here's where to report downed lines, outages.

Monday’s blizzard could dump two feet of snow on New Jersey, and with heavy snow comes the added risk of dangerous downed wires and wide spread power outages.

Forecasters and authorities are now calling the snowstorm that will slam New Jersey Monday a blizzard that could produce “historic” results, and dump more than two feet on all parts of the state. Here’s what you need to know if the power goes out.

JCP&L

Click here to report a power outage with Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L.) JCP&L urges residents to stay clear of downed wires, and assume that any downed line is live and dangerous. If you see a downed power line in your town, do not fill out the outage form. Instead, to report a downed line, call 1-888-544-4877 immediately.

Power Outage and Winter Storm Safety Tips

PSE&G stated that extra crew members are ready and equipped to respond to Monday’s blizzard. The power company also urged customers not to touch downed wires or anything the wire may have touched. PSE&G offered these safety tips for local residents. For more safety tips from PSE&G, click here.

  • Charge your cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices.
  • Fill up your car’s fuel tank.
  • Check your supply of flashlights, blankets, nonperishable food, and bottled water.
  • If electricity is interrupted, keep refrigerator doors closed as much as possible.
  • Compile a list of emergency phone numbers, including PSE&G’s Customer Service line: 1-800-436-PSEG. Call this number to report power outages or downed wires.

Winds are expected to move from the north at speeds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. Visibility will be one-quarter-mile or less at times. Temperatures will be in the lower 20s, according to the NWS.

“Extremely dangerous travel” is expected because of the heavy snowfall and strong winds, with whiteout conditions likely, according to the National Weather Service. Secondary and tertiary roads may become impassable.
