Poll: How Are You Spending the First Day of Spring?

The weather is nice and there's a discount on yogurt and smoothies. Take our poll to tell us how you're recognizing the vernal equinox.

It's the first day of spring. So, other than great 70 degree temperatures in Downtown Summit on a March afternoon, what else does that mean?

Maybe it represents a new beginning.

Officially, today is the time when the day and night are of equal length, something we call the vernal equinox. It's also a day to get a discount on some cold treats at Red Mango (first, see their Facebook page).

According to a blog on Washingtonpost.com:

Scientists define the Northern Hemisphere’s vernal equinox as ”the point, lying in the constellation Pisces, at which the sun’s ecliptic intersects the celestial equator” — as the Sun’s path reaches the First Point of Aries, and day and night are of equal length. (And this year, they say, marks the earliest spring equinox since 1896.)

And of course there's that trick with balancing an egg on its end that the website Community Connect NJ is talking about.

No matter how you celebrate the first day of spring, one thing seems a must: Do so outdoors.
