1 Dead Following Major Accident On Route 24 In Summit: Police

Summit Police advise residents to avoid the area, as multiple cars and a truck were involved in the accident on Route 24 Thursday.

SUMMIT, NJ — A serious motor vehicle accident occurred on Route 24 East near Hobart Avenue Thursday afternoon, according to an alert from Summit Police.

Police said multiple cars and a truck were involved in the accident.

All lanes are close west of Exit 9A for Broad Street, Millburn and Summit, according to a tweet from the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Residents are advised to avoid the area if possible and use an alternate route.

Update at 3:23 p.m.: Route 24 East will be closed for several hours during accident investigation by NJ State Police, according to Summit Police. Traffic congestion is heavy in the vicinity, including Summit. Police say to avoid travel in area if possible.

Update at 5:49 p.m.: According to Summit Fire Department, five cars and a tractor trailer were involved in the accident with serious injuries noted at the scene.

Three individuals were rescued from vehicles by fire departments.

One fatality was reported at the scene. One driver was flown to University Hospital trauma center in Newark by the New Jersey State Police medevac helicopter.

Other injured individuals were taken by ambulances to nearby hospitals

Summit Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Summit Police Department and the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad. Millburn and Springfield fire departments responded to the scene with Atlantic Health, Millburn and Springfield EMS.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the New Jersey State Police, Summit Fire Department said.
