Summit Gets New Top Cop

Police Chief Robert Weck will be publicly sworn in on Tues, Oct. 18.

A Summit Police Department lieutenant was appointed this week by Mayor Jordan Glatt to take the helm as police chief at a private ceremony at Summit City Hall. Robert Weck, a 23-year veteran of the department succeeds former Police Chief Robert Lucid

Among Chief Weck's priorities is to strengthen ties with the citizens of Summit.  "I believe that it is critical for the success of the police department to form a strong partnership with the community; and one of my first priorities will be to form a Community Relations Board that will include representatives of all of the community’s stakeholders," he said in a statement.

The focus of this proposed Community Relations Board, according to Chief Weck's statement, is to "bring all of the stake holders together on a regular basis to address the many issues that face our community." The aim is to work in tandem with community members to develop "proactive strategies" in local policing.

Chief Weck said in his statement, "Another initiative that I believe will have an immediate and significant impact will be the re-introduction of a walking post in our central business district and Union Place (train station, restaurants and businesses.)"

Other police department personnel who have been promoted this week include Sgt. Andrew Bartolotti, who was promoted to lieutenant. And, Summit native Richard Proctor, a former Marine Corps military police corrections specialist, who moves into the role of sergeant.
