Summit Teen Hospitalized In Pedestrian Crash, Police Say

Sun glare at the intersection of Maple Street and Broad Street contributed to the accident, the driver told police.

SUMMIT, NJ - A 14-year-old teen was hospitalized Wednesday afternoon after being hit by a vehicle in Summit, authorities said.

The incident, which occurred at the intersection of Maple Street and Broad Street near the YMCA, occurred shortly before 5 p.m., Summit police said in a statement.

At the scene, the 14-year-old Summit resident was found with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The teen reported that he was crossing Maple Street at Broad Street in the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection when he was struck by a vehicle.

The Summit teen was subsequently transported to Overlook Medical Center by the Summit Volunteer First Aid Squad.

An investigation found that the driver of the vehicle, a 41-year-old Gillette woman, was driving west on Broad Street when she attempted to make a left turn onto Maple Street and struck the victim in the crosswalk, police said. The sun glare contributed to the accident, she told police.

The woman was issued a summons for failing to yield to the right of a way of a pedestrian within a crosswalk, police added.

The incident remains under investigation by the Summit Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau.
