Traffic Shift, Lane Closures On Union County Highways Saturday Night

UNION COUNTY, NJ - Drivers on Route 22 eastbound in Union County will be detoured Saturday night due to construction. The Garden State Parkway is also being impacted.

The drainage installation work being done is part of the larger $40.8 million state-funded "Route 22/Route 82/Garden State Parkway Interchange Project" to improve highways in Union County. This includes bridges being replaced along Route 22 eastbound and Route 22 westbound over Route 82. Workers are also widening Route 22 for auxiliary lines, streamlining ramp movements, adding sidewalks, upgrading utilities and implementing new, improved directional signage.

Route 22 Eastbound

The right lane will be closed near the bridge over Chestnut Street from 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 until 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24. The left lane will still be accessible.

Traffic under the Parkway will then be diverted onto the ramp to the Parkway. Drivers will then be able to return to Route 22 eastbound or continue along the Garden State Parkway northbound.

Garden State Parkway

The Garden State Parkway northbound Exit 140 ramp will be shut and detoured from 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 until 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24.

Drivers will be directed as follows:

• "Motorists on the Garden State Parkway northbound wishing to take the Exit 140 ramp to Route 22 eastbound will be directed to take Exit 139B, which is before the Exit 140 ramp
• Turn right onto Chestnut St.
• Turn right onto Stuyvesant Ave.
• Turn right onto Morris Ave./Route 82 eastbound
• Cross under Route 22 and the Garden State Parkway
• Take the jughandle across from the Lowe’s Home Store to make a U-turn onto Morris Ave./Route 82 westbound
• Take the ramp to Garden State Parkway/Route 22
• Stay right for Route 22"

Burke Parkway Ramp

The ramp leaving Burke Parkway onto Route 22 eastbound will be closed from 11 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 until 5 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 24. Drivers will be directed as follows:

Burke Parkway southbound to Route 22 eastbound:

• "Motorists on Burke Parkway southbound wishing to take the ramp to Route 22 eastbound will be directed to continue on Burke Parkway southbound
• Turn left onto Colonial Parkway eastbound
• Turn left onto Morris Ave./Route 82 westbound
• Take the ramp to Garden State Parkway/Route 22
• Stay right for Route 22

Burke Parkway northbound to Route 22 eastbound:

• Motorists on Burke Parkway northbound wishing to take the ramp to Route 22 eastbound will be directed to continue on Burke Parkway northbound
• Turn right onto Morris Ave./Route 82 eastbound
• Cross under Route 22 and the Garden State Parkway
• Take the jughandle across from the Lowe’s Home Store to make a U-turn onto Morris Ave./Route 82 westbound
• Take the ramp to Garden State Parkway/Route 22
• Stay right for Route 22"

The full project, on track to be finished this fall, will also include an Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) with cameras and a digital message board.
