FDU Forum to Explore Lessons from Hurricane Sandy

Event to examine storm recovery and response

Fairleigh Dickinson University will host a one-day symposium at its Metropolitan Campus to examine the lessons learned from Hurricane Sandy.

Law enforcement, emergency management authorities, public utilities representatives, health care workers and corporate officials will gather June 12 for lectures and open discussions on the response and recovery from the devastating storm, FDU announced. The New Jersey National Guard and Federal Emergency Management Agency will also participate.

“The 9/11 Commission Report enumerated the strengths and weaknesses of the response to the attacks of September 11th. Subsequently, the response to Hurricane Katrina provided additional lessons for crisis management. Each crisis, natural or man made provides the opportunity to learn, to adapt and to improve," said Assistant Professor Joseph Devine, a former police chief.

Hurricane Sandy caused widespread power outages in Teaneck and major flooding in nearby Bergen County communities. Some residents criticized the township for its response to the storm, but officials have since introduced new emergency communication tools and readied the Rodda Center as a short-term "temporary transition facility."
