Man Having ‘Bad Day’ Rescued from GWB Jump
Man had one leg over the bridge railing and was preparing to jump, Port Authority says.

A Port Authority police officer grabbed a 57-year-old homeless man who was about to dive off the George Washington Bridge Thursday night, officials said.
Police Officer Raul Munoz was patrolling the bridge’s south sidewalk mid-span around 5:30 p.m. when he spotted the man with “his hands and one leg over the railing preparing to jump,” according to Port Authority spokesman Steve Coleman.
Munoz rushed to the man and wrestled him to safety away from the railing, Coleman said Friday. The distressed man continued to fight with Munoz in an attempt to reach the edge. Munoz radioed for backup and was able to handcuff the man with help with PAPD Officer William Burke.

The would-be jumper later told officers he was “having a bad day,” Coleman said.
Police learned the man had two outstanding warrants from Bloomfield and Newark municipal courts, the spokesman said. He was taken to Bergen Regional Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation.
