Teaneck Lowers W. Englewood Avenue's Speed Limit
Township officials are working to improve safety on West Englewood Avenue after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car last month.
TEANECK, NJ – Township officials are working to improve safety on West Englewood Avenue after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car last month outside of a temple.
An ordinance was adopted by the township council on Tuesday evening that would reduce the speed limit from 35 to 25 on the mile-long stretch of West Englewood Avenue from River Road to Windsor Road.
The new speed limit will go into effect 20 days from the ordinance's adoption date.

A few safety measures have already been put in place in the area, including traffic cones to prevent parking in spots that could block views of drivers and pedestrians, NorthJersey.com reported.
The newspaper reported that the township is also coordinating with NJ Transit to relocate a bus stop away from the intersection, as well as evaluating all pedestrian crosswalks to determine other safety improvements that could be made.

On Dec. 19, two men were attempting to cross West Englewood Avenue after services at Congregation Bnai Yeshurun when they were struck by a car. Sheldon Mermelstein, 75, died from his injuries; Micah Kaufman, 41, sustained critical head injuries.
