Teaneck Man Wanted in Stabbing at Englewood Eatery

Brutal stabbing leaves man in critical condition, police say.

Police are searching for a 26-year-old Teaneck man they say viciously stabbed another man at an Englewood restaurant late Friday.

Marque Edwards Jr., a convicted felon, is wanted on one count of first-degree attempted murder for attacking 36-year-old Englewood resident Sule Ouhuru at the New Jade Kitchen on West Palisade Avenue, according to city police Detective Capt. Timothy Torell.

The incident began when Ouhuru and an unidentified woman stopped to pick up Chinese food at the store around 10 p.m., Torell said. While Ouhuru went to get the food, his companion waited in the car.

That’s when Edwards forced his way into the car, at first thinking Ouhuru was inside, according to police. Realizing he had the wrong person, Edwards left the woman unharmed and ran to the restaurant where he repeatedly stabbed Ouhuru as horrified employees look on, Torell said.

Ouhuru suffered numerous stab wounds across his body, but was expected to survive, according to police.

“Mr. Ouhuru is an extremely lucky young man,” Torell said in an email. “His wounds were some of the worst I’ve seen on a surviving victim.”

He was listed in critical, but stable condition at an area hospital Sunday.

“A lot of credit should go out to a female companion of his, along with the responding patrol officers and medics,” Torell said. “They were able to slow the bleeding down just enough to be able to get him into the hospital and rushed into surgery with a chance of survival. It was that serious.”

Torell said Edwards fled in a waiting car, but security cameras captured the bloody attack.

“To those that were in the waiting vehicle when Edwards jumped in, just like I’m urging Edwards to surrender, I’m strongly urging them to come in to our detectives also. We do not want this to escalate any further,” Torell said.

Edwards has a history of arrests on charges including drug distribution and weapons possession, according to county jail records.

Ouhuru was out on bail after allegedly holding his ex-girlfriend against her will, stealing her car and firing a stolen gun at her, just missing their daughter’s crib. Friday’s attack was apparently an act of revenge over that incident, and Torell said a feud between the two was not linked to Ouhuru’s companion during the attack.

Anyone with information can call Englewood police at 201-568-2711 or 9-1-1 if Edwards is spotted, Torell said, adding all calls would be kept confidential. He should be considered armed and dangerous.
