Teaneck Police Nab Englewood Man Sought in Attack

Man allegedly hit and dragged his girlfriend in Englewood.

An Englewood man wanted for robbing and beating his girlfriend was captured by Teaneck police officers and the department's chief at a township 7-Eleven store Thursday, according to authorities.

Teaneck Police Officer Arnot Peters spotted the alleged attacker, Gnahore Gnegbo, as he walked into the convenience store after seeing a wanted poster issued by Englewood investigators, Detective Capt. Tim Torell of the Englewood Police Department said Friday.

"Law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey have several databases we effectively use to network with each other," Torell noted.

Gnegbo gave a false name when questioned by Peters, Torell said. Peters and backup officers, including Teaneck Police Chief Robert Wilson, were able to positively identify the fugitive and turn him over to Englewood police.

Gnegbo allegedly dragged his 20-year-old girlfriend by her collar, hit her in the face and stole items from her by force during an argument, Torell said. City police found the Englewood woman suffering from head injuries June 18 after responding to a reported dispute at the Stop N Go Convenience Store in the city’s 4th Ward.

Englewood detectives charged Gnegbo, 19, with domestic violence simple assault and second-degree robbery by force. Torell said Gnegbo was also wanted for violating probation in connection with a burglary charge and was sought on other warrants from several other jurisdictions.

Teaneck police also charged him with providing false information. He was being held at the Bergen County Jail on $51,000 bail.
