Tips to avoid mail theft, according to Teaneck police
- The best way to avoid the headache of stolen mail is to go inside the post office to drop it off or hand it directly to your mail carrier, especially if your mail contains checks.
- Take note of collection times – Deposit mail as close to scheduled pick-up times as possible. After that, mail is not picked up until the next business day, leaving it vulnerable.
- Patrons should also not drop mail in collection boxes over holiday weekends, or on nights before holidays, when it may accumulate. Sunday nights are the most common time for fishing.
- Only use mailboxes that have been retrofitted with anti-theft protections (See the picture below).
- If you are a victim, contact your local Police Department and Postal Inspectors immediately.
