NJ Blizzard Leaves Roads Impassable, Flights Canceled: See Snow Totals By Town

NEW JERSEY — A nor'easter continues to dump significant snow across New Jersey on Saturday, and blizzard conditions continue to be possible into the afternoon.

Along the southern New Jersey coast, snowfall totals of more than a foot have been reported as of 11:30 a.m., according to the National Weather Service. Strong winds whipping the snow have created deep snow drifts, and a number of roads are impassable as a result, authorities said.

The weather service said "blizzard criteria was met last night and this morning along the coastal strip of New Jersey and the Delaware beaches," adding it was still doing analysis on inland areas. "A blizzard is defined as three or more hours of visibility reductions to one quarter of a mile or less due to falling or blowing snow, and sustained winds or frequent gusts of 35 mph or greater."

A blizzard warning remains in effect until 4 p.m. for Cape May, Atlantic, Ocean, Monmouth and the eastern part of Burlington County. Farther west, a winter storm warning remains in place for much of the state, the weather service said.

In the northern part of the state, the winds and snow have led to the cancellation of 85 percent of the flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, airport officials said in a tweet.

"More than 85 percent of scheduled flights today have been canceled so far due to the storm (606 flights in all)," officials said. "Please check with your carrier on flight status before heading to the airport, and be safe!"

Gov. Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency that took effect at 5 p.m. Friday, and NJ Transit temporarily suspended bus service for Saturday morning ahead of the storm. Authorites in Cape May, Atlantic, Ocean and Monmouth counties were urging people to stay off the roads.

"Vehicles not equipped with 4-wheel drive are getting stuck," Brick Township police said, and Toms River police said the majority of their calls Saturday morning were for disabled vehicles. Route 539 was impassable and had several stuck cars, the Ocean County Sheriff's Office said.

The Cape May County Office of Emergency Management said all of the major roads are passable but heavy drifting snow was making plowing difficult. The office urged people to stay off the roads and give the plow crews the ability to clear the snow.

"Only essential personnel should be on the roads," the office said.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden said that while roads were treacherous, authorities had not seen a large number of calls for help, but he urged people to stay home as well.

In the western part of the state, enough snow fell that Quaker Bridge Mall announced it would be closed Saturday.

"Due to the impact of the winter storm, Quaker Bridge Mall is currently closed. The mall expects to reopen tomorrow at 12pm," mall officials said in a tweet.

While the winds have created deep snow drifts, most of the state had been spared from power outages. Atlantic City Electric and Jersey Central Power and Light both had only a handful of outages in the southern part of the state.

The snow and wind were expected to start tapering off Saturday afternoon, with an additional 2 to 4 inches of snow possible for areas that already have a foot of snow.
