Authorities say the woman's child was nearby at the time of the attack at an apartment complex in Wall Township.

WALL, NJ — A Wall Township man has been charged with attempted murder after he attacked his girlfriend with a machete in a parking lot while her child was nearby, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office said Tuesday.

The attack happened about 9:20 a.m. Thursday in the parking lot of the Glen Oaks apartment complex off Route 138, authorities said. Wall Township police found the woman suffering from multiple significant injuries and she was rushed to the hospital, authorities said.

Investigators learned Williams had repeatedly attacked the woman with a machete, causing the injuries, authorities said.

Williams was charged with one count of first-degree attempted murder, one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and one count of third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, for the machete, prosecutors said.

"The endangering charge stems from the victim’s child being in the general proximity at the time of the attack," authorities said.

Williams was arrested and is scheduled for a detention hearing set for 9 a.m. Wednesday in Monmouth County Superior Court before Superior Court Judge Richard W. English, prosecutors said.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office – Major Crimes Bureau and the Wall Township Police Department are investigating.

This case is being prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Cummings of the MCPO Major Crimes Bureau. Williams’ legal representation was not immediately available.
