1 Stabbed, 1 Arrested After Fight Outside Wayne Gym: Police

Officers found a knife nearby, and later arrested a Mahwah man on aggravated assault charges.

WAYNE, NJ — Wayne Police charged a man with aggravated assault after he reportedly stabbed another man during a fight outside a gym on Wednesday evening.

Officers and detectives arrived at Planet Fitness shortly before 6 p.m. to learn that the assailant had run off across the parking lot after the fight, police said. Several officers began searching the area while others gave medical attention to the wounded man, according to Detective Captain Dan Daly of Wayne PD.

A patrol officer found a knife in the area, which police recovered as evidence. Detectives reviewed video footage and other records, and identified 33-year-old Thomas J. Vitulano as the suspect.

Vitulano had a New York address listed, but is currently living in Mahwah, Daly said. Wayne detectives and Mahwah Police arrested him at his home later that evening.

Officials charged Vitulano on a warrant and took him to the Passaic County Jail. He faces a second-degree aggravated assault charge, along with charges of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon, Daly said.

The circumstances leading up to the fight are unclear. Police did not specify the extent of the other man's injuries.
