WAYNE, NJ — The Wayne Township School Board is looking to reorganize its business office and retain key employees as the search for a new superintendent kicks off.

Preliminary contracts for a Chief Operations Officer position and for a new Business Administrator were approved earlier this month.

Board members were in executive session for much of the Dec. 4 special meeting, where they convened to talk about the superintendent search.

They also approved two promotions, which were not on the original meeting agenda: Business Administrator William Moffitt to a new position of Chief Operations Officer, and Assistant Business Administrator Sheryl Leidig to take Moffitt's former role.

At the Dec. 12 meeting, the board also voted to increase Leidig's salary to $185,000. The job description and salary for the Chief Operations Officer role were not immediately available.

The Executive County Superintendent of Schools for Passaic County will have final approval of these changes. As for now, Moffitt and Leidig's employment agreements with the board are effective as of Dec. 2. The board will vote more formally on their contracts at a later date.

Board of Education president Donald Pavlak told TAPinto Wayne that these changes were made so quickly because one of the employees in question received an offer from another district, and Wayne Schools officials didn't want to lose them.

“Recognizing their value and the need for continuity in the business office, particularly during the superintendent search, the Board needed to act quickly," he said. "A discussion was initiated regarding a potential reorganization to retain this employee, which resulted in the approval of a revised job description and potential contract terms."

Moffitt also serves as the secretary for the Board of Education, and would remain so in his new role, board records indicate.
