Portnoy Samples 'Monster' Pizza From Wayne Ale House: See The 'One Bite' Review

Owner Rob Corujo said he wasn't there when Dave Portnoy stopped by last week, and "couldn't sleep" until the review came out on Wednesday.

WAYNE, NJ — The Wayne Ale House has a pizza inspired by Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy — but it's not the one Portnoy ended up biting into when he stopped by to review the restaurant.

But that just gives him a reason to come back again, owner Rob Corujo noted.

Portnoy has been a frequent visitor to the Garden State in his long-running "One Bite" series and is a big fan of thinner, bar-style pies. He said his camera operator, Austin, had been "talking up" the Wayne Ale House (611 Ratzer Road), and they stopped by last Thursday.

Corujo said he wasn't there when Portnoy stopped by, and he "couldn't sleep" until the review came out on Wednesday.

Portnoy definitely took more than just the titular "one bite," though, as Corujo said that the restaurant surveillance cameras show him still eating the pizza as he walked back to his car.

"I'm definitely very honored that he stopped by," Corujo said. "Just him coming, no matter what the score is, is great."

There is a "Portnoy tavern bar pie" on the menu, though Corujo said that isn't the one the crew ordered for take-out.

"His camera guy's the one who called it in, so I'm sure he wasn't looking at the menu closely," he said.

Instead, Portnoy sampled a 24-inch cheese pie, which he quipped was "giganto" and almost bigger than the bar.

He orders a cheese pizza at every stop, noting the appearance and style before he takes a bite and gives his commentary on the flavors and crust. Each pizza place is given a rating out of 10, with only one perfect 10 on record — back in 2015, at Monte's Restaurant in Lynn, Massachusetts.

The One Bite pizza review website does allow for users to rate individual restaurants, and about 90 people had already reviewed the Ale House on Portnoy's app.

"It's huge," Portnoy said, as he opened the hefty pizza box. "It's monster...Usually, I think it's a gimmick to go this big, but Austin's been talkin' this place up, 'how haven't we gone here?'"

Portnoy didn't discuss the taste of the pizza on-camera, and agreed with a customer in the bar who had predicted what his score would be: A 7.6, which is still a solid review by his discerning standards.

"It's probably the fastest review I've seen," Corujo commented.

"I think the pizza probably sat in the box for over eight minutes," he added. "It probably could have been crispier like he likes."

Portnoy also gave Corujo props for the University of Michigan sign hanging up in the window, as he is a grad.

The owner said that his phone has been buzzing with texts and social media messages as people share their excitement. A number of people commented on social media to say the tavern-style pizza would have gotten a better review, too.

The Wayne Ale House is home to a massive "super size me" slice of pizza, which is 24 inches long (pictured at the top of the article).

Corujo opened the Wayne Ale House in August of 2023, after owning a number of restaurants in the region. He also owns Public House 46.
