Fatal Passaic Co. Stabbing Suspect Nabbed, Cops Say

The accused faces a first-degree murder charge, among others.

PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A man has been arrested for fatally stabbing a man in broad daylight in Passaic County last week, officials said.

Jean Romelus, a 29-year-old Asbury Park man, was arrested Tuesday for killing a man on Oct. 22 outside Paterson City Hall, police said.

On Oct. 22, around 2:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a stabbing in the area of Market and Washington streets, outside City Hall.

Police found a local man, later identified as William Davis, 38, suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation revealed that Romelus was responsible for the stabbing, and he was arrested less than a week later, police said.

Romelus is charged with first-degree murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

If convicted, Romelus faces up to life in prison for the murder charge alone.
