Longtime Wayne Fire Co. Member Mourned, Remembered For 'Huge Heart'

WAYNE, NJ — Gregory Velardi spent 42 years as a Wayne Fire Company #2 life member, with stints as chief, president and also a career in which he became the township's fire official. But even outside of his lifesaving duties, Velardi had a "huge heart that he did not like to show," according to his obituary.

Velardi died peacefully at home Friday. The life member of Wayne Fire Company #2 was 60.

Also known as "Big Dog" and "Chief," Velardi was a lifelong Wayne resident. He graduated from Wayne Hills High School in 1980 and earned a bachelor's degree in fire science at Jersey City State College.

Velardi spent his 34-year career with the township as a fire inspector before getting promoted to township fire official. He retired in 2020.

He served many roles with Wayne Fire Company #2, including the ranks of chief from 1988-91 and president for nine years. Velardi was also a life member of the NJ State Fireman's Association and the NJ State Exempt Fireman’s Association. He previously served as president of the Bergen-Passaic Municipal Inspectors Association.

"He was easy going, very giving…even giving the gift of aggravation to others… and was generous to a fault," his obituary states.

Velardi loved the New York Giants and Yankees, passing away while watching the Bronx Bombers in the playoffs. He also felt passionate about politics, "and the family isn’t sure how, but they know Greg will vote in the upcoming November election," the obituary says.
