PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — A Passaic County teacher sexually assaulted a 9-year-old student, according to prosecutors.

Paul Yang, 32, of Leonia, was arrested on Wednesday and is now facing charges for the alleged assault.

The investigation began when the girl, a student at Paterson Public School No. 25, reported an “incident of abuse” that took place that day, officials said.

The investigation found that the student had been assaulted by Yang in his classroom during school hours, according to police.

Yang is listed as a fourth-grade teacher on the Paterson School District's website.

Yang is now charged with sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He appeared in court on Thursday, and the state is seeking pre-trial detention.

If convicted, Yang faces up to 20 years in prison.
