WEST MILFORD, NJ — A tanker truck carrying 7,000 gallons of septic waste overturned after colliding with a car on Tuesday evening in West Milford, officials said.

The crash happened around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Route 23 North and Oak Ridge Road, according to the New Jersey Department of Transportation. A "minimal amount" of septic waste spilled onto the roadway, along with oil and other vehicle fluids that leaked out of the truck, the West Milford Fire Marshals Office reported.

The truck driver sustained minor injuries in the crash, according to officials. Both state and local emergency crews responded to the scene to contain the spill, then worked for hours to offload the truck and set it back upright, the Fire Marshals Office said.

Route 23 northbound was closed for about four hours, with a detour in place. Officials did not mention any injuries to the driver of the car.

Three West Milford fire companies responded to the crash, and so did West Milford Police, the Fire Marshal, the Office of Emergency Management, West Milford First Aid, and Atlantic EMS.

New Jersey State Police and personnel from NJDOT's Incident Management program were on scene, along with the Passaic County Sheriff’s Haz-Mat unit, Passaic County Health Department, and North Jersey Canteen support unit.
