Wayne Public Library Releases Calendar of Young Adult Activities for April

Rockette Experience; Chess; Poetry SLAM!; Money Smart Young Adults; CommuniTeens Meeting.

The Wayne Public Library will host a variety of activities for young adults throughout the month of April.

Below is the date, time and description of each event:

Rockette Experience for YAs

Event Date: 4/2/2015
Event Time: 5-6 p.m.
Join former Rockette Lynn Sullivan for a special YA program, where she will share her professional experiences as a Rockette and dancer, as well as interactively teach some classic moves and poses.
Space is limited so register online starting on Thursday, March 26.
Open to students in grades 5-12. Wear comfortable clothes; dance shoes aren’t necessary.

Chess: Seasoned Players vs. Young Adults

Event Time: 6:30-8 p.m.
Kids against the Wayne Chess Club players. Friendly and informal matches to help you learn from those who have a love and knowledge of chess. Come to watch or join. Open to all kids in grades 5-12.

CommuniTeens Meeting
Event Date: 4/16/2015
Event Time: 6:30-7:30 p.m.
CommuniTeens is a service group of Wayne kids in grades 6-12 who are interested in being active advocates of the library among their peers, helping with different library needs and sharing their voice about Y.A. programs & book related activities. Students commit to participate in meetings or CommuniTeen-sponsored programs such as Tech-Help from Teens held alternating months, led by Eleana.
These activities are generally held on the 3rd Thursday evening of the month for an hour.
Other pluses: get to know other like-minded kids, commit to volunteerism, and get snacks and beverages funded by the Friends of the WPL.

Poetry SLAM! with Darryl McDaniels of Run DMC

Event Time: 2 - approximately 4 p.m.
In celebration of National Poetry Month, middle & high school students will recite their own original work of poetry. This special event with be emceed by the legendary Darryl McDaniels of the hip-hop group Run DMC. Young Adults will recite their poetic expressions. Three winners will be chosen. First prize is DMC’s newest comic book, personalized & autographed for the winner; Second prize is a pair of DMC Adidas Shell-toe sneakers, personalized & autographed; Third prize is a DMC T-shirt, personalized & autographed. After the recitations and selection of winners, there will be a brief Q & A with our Master of Ceremonies.

Online registration to attend as part of the audience is required due to limited seating, starting Monday, April 6 and open to kids in grades 6-12. Students interested in performing must be confirmed in advance. Any questions, contact Eleana Cordova at cordovae@waynepubliclibrary.org.

Money Smart Young Adults
Event Date: 4/23/2015
Event Time: 5-6 p.m.
Money Smart Week® is a public awareness campaign created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002 to help consumers of all ages better manage their personal finances. Judith Keyes & Monica Kowal, representatives of Atlantic Stewardship Bank will help Y.A.s understand various age-appropriate aspects of financial literacy in an educational interactive discussion.
Online registration starts on Wednesday, April 15. Open to students in grades 6-12.

WPL Y.A. Chess Club
Event Date:
4/25/2015
Event Time: 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Young Adults in grades 5-12 are welcome to play chess against each other. This casual gathering normally occurs monthly on a Saturday in the Story Time room.
Online registration required beginning Friday, April 17.
