WAYNE, NJ — The Wayne Township Board of Education has called a special meeting on Wednesday to discuss the selection of the district's next superintendent.

Current superintendent Dr. Mark Toback, who arrived at the district in 2014, announced his retirement back in November. The board hired Comegno Education Institute to partner in the search, and the advertisement for the position was released on Feb. 14.

School board members had been interviewing candidates during the last two weekends in March and are in "the final stages" of the selection process, Board President Donald Pavlak said last week. He added that the board is still on track to name the new superintendent by the first week of May, as set out in the search timeline posted on the Wayne Public Schools website.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. on April 9 at the municipal building (475 Valley Road), inside Township Council chambers. It is open to the public; the meeting agenda consists the appointment of the superintendent as well as any other business that would come before the board.

On Tuesday, Pavlak told Patch that board members are waiting on approval from the Passaic County Executive Superintendent to approve a contract for their chosen candidate, who has not yet been announced, before they would take a vote.

The new superintendent is expected to begin on Aug. 1.
