Free Rabies Shot Clinic Coming Up In Gloucester County

Free rabies shot clinics for dogs and cats are going on in communities around Gloucester County from January through April.

CLAYTON, NJ — If your dog or cat's rabies shot will expire this year, there are plenty of upcoming opportunities to get them that potentially lifesaving vaccine for free in Gloucester County.

The county has multiple dates scheduled between January and April for residents to get their cats and dogs vaccinated against rabies, free of charge. The county Board of Commissioners, Department of Health and Human Services, and Animal Shelter are working together to organize the clinics.

County officials urge pet owners to keep their pets' vaccination status up to date. They also advise adults and children to avoid any wild animals, and to not approach stray dogs or cats. Rabies is spread through the saliva of infected animals, and can be deadly if left untreated.

The Gloucester County Health Department recommends that all pets have their current rabies vaccinations.

Commissioner Director Frank J. DiMarco and Commissioner Jim Jefferson both encouraged neighbors to protect their animals and families and get pets vaccinated.

“In order to keep pets and people safe from the disease, we encourage our residents to take advantage of the free rabies clinics we offer in order to ensure the safety of their animals should they ever encounter infected animals," said DiMarco, who serves as liaison to the animal shelter.

“We see our pets as part of our families and would do anything to keep them safe," said Jefferson, who oversees the Gloucester County Department of Health. "By vaccinating our pets we are giving them a defense against the disease but also helping prevent any animals that may live in the same house or interact with your pet from being infected as well.”

If you see an animal behaving oddly, contact Animal Control at 856-881-2828.
