Eagle Scout Improves Trail at Tamaques Park

Gideon Lee, 17, of Westfield coordinated an improvement project for the Prefontaine Trail at Tamaques Park as part of his Eagle Scout Project.

Lee, of Troop 273, noticed the poor condition of the trail during his runs on the Cross Country team as WHS freshman. The project included improving the look of the trail and making sure it was clearly marked.

Using social media, Lee was able to gather members of his troop and volunteers from the cross-country team to assist in the project. Businesses such as, Westfield Lumber, Weldon Materials Inc., Bartell’s and Home Depot donated materials to the project, while Public Works assisted in transporting some of them, Lee said.

“It was great to have so many of my troop and cc team come out to work last Sunday. I couldn't have done it without their help,” Lee explained. “The improvements have made a huge difference to the trail and I know runners, walkers and others just enjoying the park will appreciate it for many years.”

Lee told Patch that he started the proposal about a year ago, but had to get approval from the Town of Westfield and also gather donations to fund the project.

Now, Prefonataine Trail features two signs, two benches, a trial maker and the exposed roots have been covered with dirt and gravel to make it safer. One of the signs includes an inspirational quote by Lee’s former coach, Jack Martin.
