Thieves Targeted Luxury Car In Attempted Break-In At Westfield Home: Police

The suspect (s) tried to break into the home first.

WESTFIELD, NJ — Police are looking for a black BMW X5 with New York plates after an attempted break-in at a home on Sunday.

At around 4 a.m., at least one person tried to break into a home in the 500 block of Westfield Ave, said Westfield Police. They tried to get in through first-floor windows, but were not able to enter.

According to Westfield Police, they believe the item they wanted to steal was a high-end sport utility vehicle in the driveway.

This follows two burglaries of high-end vehicles just days earlier on Oct. 13. Officials say cars in the 1000 block of Minisink Way and the 300 block of Orenda Circle were likely left unlocked and had no damage to suggest any forced entry.

The suspect (s) in those cases were driving a dark Porsche sport utility vehicle.

As of Monday, 11,140 vehicles have been reported stolen in New Jersey this year, said Westfield Police. That's an average of 38 per day.

Last week, nineteen were reported stolen in just Union County.

The Westfield Police Department said they are "aggressively" patrolling residential neighborhoods during the overnight hours. Residents are strongly encouraged to lock their homes and vehicles, and to report any and all suspicious vehicles, persons and/or activities immediately by calling 9-1-1.
