WESTFIELD, NJ — After serving the district for over six years, Amy Root announced her resignation from the Westfield Board of Education at Tuesday night's meeting.
Root explained that she is moving out of state and will no longer be able to serve on the board.
"It is with a heavy heart that I move on, with over six years on the Board of Education and 14 years of volunteering in the schools," Root said.

She explained that her house is currently under contract and that her closing date is at the end of this week. Because she is still currently a taxpayer resident in Westfield, she was able to participate in the voting at Tuesday's meeting.
According to Tapinto, Root is moving to Ohio to live closer to her two children.

"It's been a great honor and a privilege to serve the community through two years of vice president, one year as president during 2021," Root said.
Board member Sahar Aziz recognized Root for her service and noted that Root was president during a very difficult time of the pandemic and that she handled it with "grace and professionalism."
Root also encouraged people who care about the district to consider running for the board.
Board President Brendan Galligan thanked Root for her service and formally accepted her resignation.
"I wish I didn't have to, but you're doing the right thing for your family," Galligan said. "I'm very sorry to see you go. I wish you all the best."
Galligan said the district will soon issue a press release and ask interested members of the community to submit resumes to the Board. The next appointed member will serve out the rest of Root's term through the April election.
